How to get to JFK Airport: the real options, priced
Getting to JFK Airport from New York City comes down to four real options: taxi, private car, rideshare, or transit. There is no shuttle from a Manhattan heliport, and no page should tell you otherwise. Here are the options as they actually stand.

By yellow taxi
The JFK to Manhattan yellow-taxi flat fare is $70, and with the standard surcharges it comes to $76.75 — $0.50 MTA surcharge, $1.00 improvement surcharge, $2.00 JFK airport access fee, $2.50 state congestion surcharge, and $0.75 congestion-pricing toll — or $81.75 in weekday rush hours from 4 to 8 p.m., when a $5.00 rush surcharge applies. From other parts of the city, taxis to JFK are metered: $3.00 to start plus $0.70 per fifth of a mile, plus tolls and tip.
By private car with JetBlack
JetBlack is a New York private car service, in business since 2010. The JFK to Manhattan economy route fare is $65, excluding tolls, the suggested 20% gratuity, and governmental fees, which are billed separately and confirmed in writing. Every other JFK trip is priced at a per-trip written quote, or at the published hourly rates: economy sedan from $45 per hour with a 3-hour minimum, up to stretch limousine at $144 per hour with a 4-hour minimum, and standard Sprinter at $130 per hour. Child seats are available for about $35 per seat, confirmed at booking — never free.

By public transit
The AirTrain plus subway chain costs $11.75: $8.75 for the AirTrain plus $3.00 for the subway. From Manhattan, take the subway to Jamaica or Howard Beach and the AirTrain to your terminal. The Long Island Rail Road from Penn Station or Grand Central to Jamaica is faster and costs more — check the current fare before you travel, since peak and off-peak fares differ. Note that JFK Terminal 2 closed permanently in January 2023, so plan around terminals 1, 4, 5, 7 and 8.
By rideshare
Rideshare fares to JFK are not flat and are not regulated like the taxi flat fare — they move with demand, and a surge price can easily exceed the taxi stack. Get the price before you confirm, and compare it with the $76.75 taxi total and the $65 JetBlack economy route fare.
What to confirm before you book
- Your JFK terminal and your flight time, so dispatch can track delays and plan the buffer — for an international departure, plan to reach JFK at least 3 hours before takeoff.
- The total price in writing, including tolls, the suggested 20% gratuity, and governmental fees.
- The wait policy that applies to your booking, and the cancellation terms: free before confirmation, and a $31 total after confirmation — $25 plus $5 in fees plus a $1 technology fee.
